Superintendent of Public Instruction
Republican Jennifer McCormick
The Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction leads the Indiana Department of Education as it provides guidance for and audits the implementation of educational policy and curriculum from kindergarten through high school. The office holder sits on several boards and councils in the state, including the state Board of Education and Governor's Workforce cabinet.
The position is an elected one, but Indiana's governor will be responsible for appointing an education secretary to lead the department by 2025.
Current State Superintendent Jennifer McCormick announced in 2018, she would not be running for re-election in 2020 because of "unhealthy governance structure."
