Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations Focus on Senate Consideration

INDIANAPOLIS – Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a rescissions package that includes the elimination of future federal funding for public media through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The measure now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations (IPBS), which represents the state’s 17 PBS and NPR member stations, is closely monitoring the move and its potential implications for local service delivery across Indiana.

“Indiana’s public media stations play a unique role in delivering trusted news, classroom-ready education content, emergency alerts, and cultural programming to communities across the state,” said Mark Newman, Executive Director of IPBS. “Our focus now shifts to the Senate, where we will continue to work with our partners and policymakers to emphasize the value of this essential public service.”

If enacted, the rescission would impact the foundational funding that supports local station operations, especially in rural and underserved communities. These funds are often matched with private and local investment, amplifying their impact at the community level.

“Federal support makes it possible for stations to extend their reach, deepen their journalism, and build programs that reflect the people and stories of Indiana,” Newman continued. “We will continue engaging with stakeholders at every level to ensure the critical role of public media is understood and preserved.”

In the weeks ahead, IPBS will expand its efforts to inform the public and Indiana’s congressional delegation about the potential consequences of the proposal and highlight the broad public benefit that comes from sustained investment in public broadcasting.
